Background

Beardy's and Okemasis First Nation provides alternative measures for adults and youth and community-based intensive case management for offenders. This initiative is based on the 1995 agreement between the federal, provisional and Aboriginal governments to work toward a First Nations community-based justice system.

Caseload

Up to 10 family group conferences: and

Up to 5 healing circles and 8 sentencing circles

Program Organization and Management

The Community Justice Work, who reports to the Councillor in Charge of Justice and the Chief and Council of Beardy's and Okemasis First Nation, takes the lead in developing the justice program and completing alternative measures cases. The Traditional Justice Committee includes members of the community who provide advice for the justice program, organize sentencing and healing circles and supervise offenders in the case management program. Elders play a major role in guiding all activities.

The Police Management Board Committee includes members of the community who provide assistance, advice to members of the RCMP to establish a positive relationship with Band Members and the detachment.

Justice initiatives include linkages with Cultural Components involving Federal and Provincial in-mates while incarcerated.
